R Program to Change Column Name of a Dataframe

Example 1: Change Column Name of Dataframe Using colnames()

# Create a data frame
dataframe1 <- data.frame (
  A = c("Juan", "Alcaraz", "Simantha"),
  B = c(22, 15, 19),
  C = c(TRUE, FALSE, TRUE)
)

# change column name using colnames()
colnames(dataframe1) <- c("Name", "Age", "Vote")

# display dataframe1 with new column names
print(dataframe1)

Output

     Name Age  Vote
1     Juan  22  TRUE
2  Alcaraz  15 FALSE
3 Simantha  19  TRUE

In the above example, we have used the colnames() function to change the name of the current column of dataframe1 with new ones.

Initially, the names of three columns are A, B, and C respectively.

colnames(dataframe1) <- c("Name", "Age", "Vote")

The code above changes the current column names of dataframe1 with new names: "Name", "Age", and "Vote" respectively.

Example 2: Change Column Name Using setNames()

# Create a data frame
dataframe1 <- data.frame (
  A = c("Juan", "Alcaraz", "Simantha"),
  B = c(22, 15, 19),
  C = c(TRUE, FALSE, TRUE)
)

# change column name using setNames() and display 
print(setNames(dataframe1, c("Name", "Age", "Vote")))

Output

     Name Age  Vote
1     Juan  22  TRUE
2  Alcaraz  15 FALSE
3 Simantha  19  TRUE

In the above example, we have used the setNames() function to change the name of the current column of dataframe1 with new ones.

The column names A, B, and C are replaced with new names "Name", "Age", and "Vote" respectively.
